Lightsource bp is pleased to have secured planning approval for the Straboe Solar and Energy Storage Project, a proposed 102MW solar PV installation with a 60MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Straboe, Tullow, Co. Carlow.<\/strong> Once operational, the hybrid project is expected to generate enough low-carbon energy to power the equivalent of 26,400 homes per year, while avoiding an estimated 47,100 tonnes of CO\u2082e annually – the same as taking 28,300 cars off the road each year.<\/p>\n

Hybrid solar and storage projects are important developments in the energy transition. Pairing solar generation with battery storage systems supports grid stability by storing electricity when supply is high and releasing it when it is needed most.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlanning approval marks an important milestone for Lightsource bp\u2019s growing Irish portfolio of solar and storage projects which includes 386MW PV and 451MW BESS. Once operational, Straboe will play an important role in delivering Ireland\u2019s target of 80% of renewable energy by 2030. The project has been carefully designed following detailed environmental assessments covering landscape and visual impact, heritage and archaeology, ecology, ornithology, and flood risk.<\/p>\n

We take pride in engaging with local communities throughout the lifetime of our solar farms, building strong relationships as neighbours. Community engagement has been central to the development process at Straboe, including a public information event at Grange GAC Club Hall where residents were able to speak directly with the project team. Their feedback played an important role in shaping the final plans, ensuring the project reflects local priorities and supports the wider community. One of these benefits is the establishment of a Community Benefit Fund (CBF). The CBF will fund projects or initiatives that: improve quality of life, support growth and development opportunities or promote efficiency and awareness. In addition to this, the project will contribute \u20ac1.2 million in development funds to Carlow County Council.<\/p>\n

Alongside delivering low-carbon, reliable energy to Ireland\u2019s electricity network, the project will support biodiversity enhancements across the 320\u2011acre site and provide long-term environmental benefits. It also represents a meaningful contribution to Ireland\u2019s renewable energy and climate\u2011action goals.<\/p>\n
