Lightsource bp is working on a proposal for an energy storage project at land south of Lauder and west of Blainslie. We will fund and operate a 150MW/600 MWh (4-hour duration) battery connected into the national grid. The energy storage project will facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the grid, helping to support low-cost electricity and the enhanced reliability of the electricity grid.

We’ve chosen this site after careful consideration, and we’re now undertaking a wide range of environmental assessments to help shape our plans. These include landscape and visual, heritage and archaeology, ecology and ornithology, flooding and more.

A key part of developing plans for the energy storage project is engaging with local communities. We held information events on 7th August 2025 at Blainsile and 16th September 2025 at Lauder, to inform the local community and ask for their feedback. Representatives from Lightsource bp were on hand to answer any questions about the proposal from local residents and interested parties, and we sent out an information leaflet to the local community, as well as a press release to local newspapers.

Resources and documents

We’re committed to remaining open and engaged with the community during this process. Alternatively, we’re offering anyone who would like to discuss the project the chance to have a one-on-one discussion with our Environmental Planning team, either by phone or via video conferencing. Please use the form below to get in touch if you’d like to arrange this.

Our Proposal

Our plans are being finalised following feedback from the community consultation events and the results of our environmental and planning assessments. These are our current thoughts.

The map highlights key features: site boundary (red), access via Lauder Road, agricultural land grading (Class 4.2–5.3), existing vegetation preservation, new planting for screening and biodiversity, flood risk mitigation with the Environment Agency, and cultural heritage impact assessments. Inset text explains ecological surveys, views and screening, and cable route to SP Energy Networks’ Gala North Substation, reflecting a commitment to sustainable, community-sensitive development.
