Large‑scale battery storage in Queensland
Lightsource bp is constructing the Woolooga Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Gympie in Queensland, co‑located with the Woolooga solar farm. The project will include 128 battery units with a total storage capacity of up to 640MWh and an export capacity of 222MW. Once operational, the system will store electricity when demand is low and release it during peak periods, helping balance supply and demand across the electricity network.
The Woolooga BESS is the largest standalone battery storage project currently under construction in Lightsource bp’s global portfolio. The project will deliver fast‑response grid services such as frequency control and energy arbitrage, supporting system stability while enabling more renewable energy to be integrated into Australia’s evolving electricity mix.
Located in the Woolooga area near Gympie, close to Lightsource bp’s Lower Wonga solar project currently under construction, the battery will operate as a standalone energy storage facility supporting the broader electricity network. By strengthening grid reliability and improving energy flexibility, the project will help accelerate the transition toward a more resilient, low‑carbon electricity system in Queensland.
The Woolooga BESS is expected to be operational by late‑2026.

Supporting a reliable energy system
Grid‑scale battery storage plays a vital role in modern electricity systems by helping manage fluctuations between electricity supply and demand.
The Woolooga Energy Storage Project will:
- Store excess renewable energy generated during off‑peak periods.
- Release stored electricity when demand on the grid is higher.
- Provide fast‑response grid services, including frequency control.
- Improve the reliability and flexibility of Queensland’s electricity network.
By enabling renewable energy to be stored and dispatched when it is needed most, large‑scale battery storage supports a more reliable, efficient and sustainable power system for Queensland and the broader National Electricity Market.
