Proposed energy storage project near Drumquin

Lightsource bp is working on a proposal for an energy storage project near Drumquin. We will fund and operate a 100MW battery installation connected into the electricity transmission network.

The energy storage facility will help to:

  • support renewables’ ability to meet more of Northern Ireland’s electricity demands more of the time – enabling electricity to flow on an ‘as needed’ basis and be stored in between times – and reducing the amount of renewably generated electricity that can’t be used;
  • lower electricity bills by supporting cheaper renewables; and
  • enhance both the reliability of the electricity network, and our energy security.

We’ve chosen this site after careful consideration, and we are undertaking environmental assessments to help inform our plans. These assessments include landscape and visual, heritage and archaeology, ecology, flooding and more.

A part of developing plans for the energy storage project is engaging with local communities, so we’re holding an information event on 10th April at the Drumquin Community Youth Centre to display our plans and gather feedback. We’ll send out an information leaflet to the local community, as well as a press release to local newspapers, inviting interested parties to join us at the event. Members of the Lightsource bp team will be on hand to answer any questions about the proposal.

Our Proposal

Our plans are being finalised following feedback from the community information event and the results of our environmental and planning assessments. These are our current thoughts.
