Lightsource bp joins the National Farmers Union – a natural partnership

At Lightsource bp, we strongly believe in solar’s ability to make a difference to the agricultural economy. Our solar projects deliver secure, long-term, bankable income to landowners while also generating renewable energy, and we’re committed to making sure that we’re having as much of a positive impact as possible.

That’s why we’ve reinstated our membership of the National Farmers Union in the UK. We worked with the NFU on projects across the UK for many years when large-scale solar was first getting off the ground, supporting farmers and growers in England and Wales to diversify their businesses and secure long-term, reliable income. During this period of time, Lightsource bp and the NFU partnered on a number of events and initiatives designed to raise awareness of how solar and farming can go hand in hand – take a look at the video below for one example.

Now, as UK solar enters its next phase, we’re proud to once again be partnering with the NFU and contributing to their work for a stable and sustainable future for farming, alongside making a positive impact to the low-carbon transition.

We work so well with the NFU because their priorities align closely with ours when it comes to supporting rural businesses across the UK. Our ongoing investment into research and development surrounding agrivoltaics – the practice of combining agricultural land use with solar – is just one of the ways that we are working at the forefront of the industry to create solutions that address the climate and energy crises in tandem, while also producing food.

Through our partnership with the NFU we’re looking forward to highlighting the ways in which solar and agricultural can coexist and support each other to thrive. We’re two sides of the same coin, food and energy security, and addressing the issues in tandem is a win-win proposition.
