Lightsource bp supports UK Government’s decision to retain national pricing in electricity market reform
Lightsource bp congratulates the UK Government’s decision to retain a national wholesale electricity pricing model. This balanced and pragmatic decision preserves the UK’s ability to deploy solar and other renewables at scale across the country, while creating space for meaningful improvements to grid access, planning and system efficiency.
“This is a constructive step forward,” said Vlasios Souflis, Chief Operating Officer for EMEA at Lightsource bp. “The decision not to pursue zonal pricing removes a layer of complexity and risk – particularly at a time when delivery speed and investment certainty are essential to meet the UK’s 2030 targets.”
Lightsource bp has consistently advocated for reforms that enable faster connection times, strategic grid investment, and fair access to flexibility markets – critical enablers for solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS) deployment at scale.
This announcement builds on the Solar Roadmap published on 30 June 2025, which sets a clear ambition for deploying 45–47GW of solar by 2030, and by removing uncertainties allows industry stakeholders to focus on the Clean Power Action Plan 2030. Achieving the solar goal and CP30 objectives will require coordinated action across regulation, planning, and infrastructure delivery. And needs to be closely developed in partnership with landowners, communities, and grid operators.
Souflis added: “We look forward to working with Government, Ofgem, and NESO as the plan moves from design into delivery. There is no time to lose – we must urgently accelerate grid development and upgrades, unlock access and market signals for BESS, and support electrification. Through continued collaboration, we can build an energy system that is not only clean and secure—but also cost-effective and investable.”
