Spotlight: High Voltage (HV) expertise in the Lightsource bp Operations & Maintenance team
At Lightsource bp, our Operations and Maintenance (O&M) team provides comprehensive third-party services for solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the UK. A key component of these services is our High Voltage (HV) team, which plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, effective operation of renewable energy assets. With a focus on maximizing performance and returns, our HV team is central to maintaining the safety and reliability of high-voltage equipment across all of the assets we manage.
What does the HV team do?
Our HV team oversees the regular maintenance, design reviews and continuous monitoring of the assets we operate. They are also responsible for the robust protection systems that are essential to address any issues and ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of high voltage equipment, and provide maximum returns for our clients.
The work carried out by the HV team requires in-depth knowledge of electrical safety protocols, risk assessments, and emergency procedures, as well as the ability to oversee complex operations involving high-voltage equipment and cross-boundary works liaising with DNO and IDNO networks. Our team members hold the highest level of responsibility in these settings, overseeing teams, making critical decisions, and ensuring compliance with industry safety standards and regulations.
To ensure that the assets under our management are operating as safely and efficiently as possible, we have a 24/7 emergency line for incidents, which alerts the on-call duty manager. Our team works 365 days a year, and all HV faults are attended within an average of four hours, as a key part of our commitment to providing the best and safest possible operations to our third-party clients.
Who’s on the team?
We pride ourselves on the expertise and skillsets of our HV team, consisting of Senior Authorised Persons (SAPs), a Control Engineer and a HV SAP Technical Manager, who oversee the day-to-day work of operating the portfolios we manage. They’re entrusted with the authority to control, isolate and manage electrical systems in high-risk environments – without which we would be unable to effectively operate and maintain the solar and BESS assets we manage.
All the team are trained Electrical Engineers, with extensive experience in electrical distribution on private and DNO networks. We invest in regular training and professional development for our teams, and as such our SAPs are required to attend external City & Guilds Approved Training Courses, with refreshes every 3 years and constant CPD to make sure we’re operating at the cutting edge.
Why choose Lightsource bp’s O&M team?
The HV team within O&M at Lightsource bp is dedicated to ensuring the seamless operation of high-voltage systems, minimizing downtime, and providing long-term value for our clients. By combining industry-leading expertise, rigorous safety protocols, and responsive support, we deliver the reliable, high-performance operations that are critical for the success of solar and BESS assets. Whether you’re an asset owner or part of a third-party service, our team is here to help ensure the continued success of your renewable energy operations.
