Honeysuckle Solar drives Indiana manufacturing

In St. Joseph County, Indiana, the direct impacts of America’s solar manufacturing surge are on display. Just east of South Bend sits a 188MW solar farm built by local hands, using components manufactured 16 miles down the road.

The project, called Honeysuckle Solar, features equipment from two American manufacturers—panels from First Solar and smart trackers from Array Technologies, Inc. By sourcing from these domestic suppliers, Lightsource bp is helping fuel the onshoring of the solar supply chain, which will support 100,000 American jobs by 2033.

The impacts ripple throughout the U.S. economy, including in St. Joseph County. Workers at the local LockJoint Tube manufacturing facility produced the torque tubes—a major component of the smart solar trackers—installed at Honeysuckle Solar. These tubes are part of the racking which hold up the panels and tilt them throughout the day to follow the sun, maximizing energy generation.

During construction, 85% of the workforce building Honeysuckle lived in St. Joseph and the surrounding Indiana counties, with representation from three local unions.
