Planning permission received for first ever UK standalone energy storage project
Lightsource bp is announcing another significant milestone in its UK operations, as the company has been granted planning permission for its first ever UK standalone energy storage project.
Located near Bangor, in Wales, the Pentir energy storage project consists of a 57MW/228MWh battery connected into the local electricity network. The project will facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the grid, helping to support low-cost electricity and the enhanced reliability of the electricity grid.
As part of the project, Lightsource bp is offering a community benefit fund to the local parish councils, with a total of £50,000. The company is also supporting the Ogwen Valley Mountain Organisation, a mountain rescue service, with a £45,000 fund for solar, battery and boiler improvements to reduce their carbon footprint and improve sustainability, while providing vital services to the local community.
Declan Keiley, Head of Business Development for UK & Ireland at Lightsource bp, says: “This project is the first in Lightsource bp’s extensive UK energy storage pipeline, and demonstrates the company’s commitment to accelerating the energy transition, not just by generating renewable electricity but also by contributing to deeper penetration of renewables, and better grid balancing.”
