Community hospital check presentation, job fair kick off for Lightsource bp Jones City solar in Jones County, Texas

- A $195,000 community investment in Anson General Hospital will supply 11 new beds, computers for telehealth services
- March 18 check presentation held alongside job fair with Lightsource bp construction partner, McCarthy Building Companies
- Jones City energy center will create approximately 500 jobs during construction
The Jones City energy center, a 700 MWdc Lightsource bp project in Jones County, Texas, is in its early stages, but the area already is benefitting from its new community partner.
Lightsource bp recently presented a $195,000 check to Anson General Hospital, a small, federally designated rural emergency hospital in Anson, Texas. During the course of its 70+ year history, the hospital has maintained emergency and general care operations, even in the face of chronic financial challenges. It is the last remaining hospital in Jones County.
“Two and a half years ago, our future did not look as bright…We were struggling just to make payroll, and we could do nothing else,” Matthews said during the March 18th check presentation ceremony. “Now we have a future…We are growing services and providing care for our community. It’s just an amazing story.”
The community investment will fund 11 new patient beds, as well as new computers. Anson General Hospital interim CEO Ted Matthews said that if they had to purchase beds through normal budget allocations, the replacement process would have taken more than five years.
This contribution will also help the hospital invest in new technology to enhance patient care through telehealth. Many of Anson General Hospital’s computers only operate on Windows 7, a system released in 2009, limiting the ability to offer telehealth services, including mental health evaluation and facility referrals.
“[Lightsource bp has] been so generous and so willing to work with the area and the community, that I give them accolades for their outreach efforts,” Jones County Judge Dale Spurgin said during the ceremony. “The team they have brought in here has been excellent.”
Job fairs seek to hire local workers
Lightsource bp’s Jones City energy center currently is under construction in Jones County, Texas, creating approximately 500 jobs. On the same day as the check presentation, construction partner McCarthy Building Companies held job fairs in Anson and Abilene.
Hundreds of individuals of all experience levels lined up at the job fairs or have applied online to work on construction.
McCarthy will offer its apprenticeship program during the Jones City energy center construction. The apprenticeship program pairs entry-level workers with experienced senior- and journey-level professionals to gain valuable on-the-job experience to jumpstart participants’ careers, teaching valuable skills that could also be transitioned to other industries and trades.
Long-term commitment to Jones County’s economy
The Jones City energy center is a privately funded project that will deliver low–cost, domestically generated electricity. The projects also will offset carbon dioxide emissions by 699,000 metric tons each year, contribute $86 million in property taxes to local schools and public services, support domestic manufacturing from US-based suppliers and boost the local economy during construction and operations.
“When Lightsource bp builds a renewable energy project, we become part of the community for years to come,” said Emilie Wangerman, Chief Operating Officer for Lightsource bp in the US. “We are truly honored to work with Anson General Hospital, the Chamber of Commerce, McCarthy Building Companies and the neighbors who call this place home, and we are grateful to support Anson’s next chapter.”
