Lightsource bp publishes 2025 Sustainability Report

Lightsource bp had 7GW of assets under construction and operation in 2025, generating 6.3TWh of renewable energy around the world to support the avoidance of an estimated 3.8 million tonnes of CO2e.

Our annual Sustainability Report outlines the work we do to support a future powered by renewable, affordable and reliable energy. The report covers performance across our three core sustainability pillars – reliable, affordable renewable energy, environmental stewardship and social responsibility, all underpinned by Lightsource bp’s commitment to effective and robust governance.

Joaquin Oliveira, Group Chief Executive Officer of Lightsource bp, said: “The global energy transition continues to accelerate, with governments, businesses and communities working to build more resilient energy systems. At Lightsource bp, we are proud to play our part in delivering assets that support this transformation. Our ambition is to continue to build a resilient onshore renewables platform that delivers long-term value for our partners, communities and the energy systems we help power.”

2025 Sustainability Report highlights:

  • 7GW of assets in operation and under construction in 2025, generating 6.3TWh of renewable energy and supporting the avoidance of an estimated 3.8 million tonnes of CO2e.
  • 2.3GW of new projects developed, including 0.8GW of storage assets.
  • 32% reduction in scope 3 carbon intensity compared with 2021.
  • 3GW solar grazing under management in the USA.
  • 100% of active module and battery storage suppliers subject to ESG and traceability audits or assessments.

Innovation and impact in practice:

The report also highlights case studies to illustrate how we are translating sustainability commitments into real world actions:

  • ‘Ecovoltaics’ research to support thriving ecosystems – two research projects at our 173MW Bellflower solar project in Indiana, USA, found that bat activity was around 50% higher at solar sites than at reference fields. The research also found that ecovoltaic sites in this region supported more grassland bird species than control row-crop sites, and that bird communities were more stable. These findings reinforce our commitment to using thoughtful design and rigorous monitoring to understand and continually improve how solar can create thriving ecosystems.
  • Pioneering onsite battery storage – A key driver of Lightsource bp’s scope 2 carbon emissions is the offtake required to power ancillary infrastructure within operational solar assets overnight. Lightsource bp’s innovation team is exploring a small-scale onsite battery solution that will be charged by solar PV through the day to meet the site’s overnight demand. This aims to reduce electricity imports by 95%, nearly eliminating scope 2 emissions from solar assets. The project will be piloted at a UK site in 2026, with potential to scale to other existing sites from early 2027 onward.
  • Hail monitoring and response – potential for increased rapid-onset, severe weather events in some regions has enhanced the importance of the early-stage, multidisciplinary risk planning we undertake for our operating assets. In June 2025, proactive use of Lightsource bp’s Whiskey Ball hail mitigation protocol meant that when a severe hailstorm struck our 27.5MWp Johnson Corner solar site fewer than 100 of 75,000 modules – just 0.13% – suffered damage, helping to protect the asset’s long-term value and insurance outcomes.

Penny Laurenson, Global Head of Sustainability, Communications and Geospatial, said: “Sustainability works best when it’s just part of how we do business, not a separate process on the side. 2025 has been defined by translating our strategic priorities into tangible progress – working with the business to develop solutions and policies that work in practice, and embedding them into our ways of working.”
