Our partnerships: Community support, national non-profits, education & industry groups

The benefits we’re able to people, the planet and our industry are enhanced through collaborative initiatives with our partners. At Lightsource bp, we’re excited to support and work with organizations that share our desire to create a more sustainable, resilient and equitable world for present and future generations. Below we have highlighted some of our key partners who are helping us achieve these goals.

Investing in communities across the U.S.A.

We have a dedicated Community Relations team that works closely with local stakeholders to ensure that our solar projects bring benefits beyond generating clean electricity that improves air quality for healthier communities. We construct our solar farms with a view to strengthen rural economies, support underserved populations, promote solar education, foster environmental sustainability, and create partnerships.

For local communities that are home to our projects, we donated more than $515,000 in 2023. We encourage our team members to volunteer in these communities as well. You can learn about some of the organizations we have supported below.

If you would like to connect with one of our community relations managers, please email USCommunityRelations@Lightsourcebp.com.

Alabama

Montgomery Area Food Bank

Fighting hunger and food insecurity in Alabama

The Montgomery Area Food Bank (MAFB) has a mission to source, acquire and distribute nutritious food to those experiencing hunger and food insecurity in their region so that families, seniors, and children can thrive. In 2022, Lightsource bp supported the MAFB’s program to provide children who rely on school nutrition programs with food and holiday meals over winter break.
Arkansas

Arkansas Monarch Conservation Partnership

Conserving habitat for pollinator species

The Arkansas Monarch Conservation Partnership (AMCP) is working to create, enhance and conserve habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinator species across the state. Due to habitat loss and other factors, including climate change, monarch populations have sharply declined over the last twenty years. So much so, that they are now included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species.  That’s one reason why Lightsource bp and the AMCP are teaming up to create a haven for monarchs at Conway Solar at Happy, our utility-scale solar farm in White County, Arkansas. The 135MW solar farm will house a five-acre native pollinator garden with a high density of diverse plants, providing habitat and critical nectar for monarch butterflies and other pollinators. Lightsource bp signed a memorandum of cooperation in February 2022, joining over two dozen other organizations who share in the partnership’s mission and vision.

Care and Share

Fighting hunger and food insecurity in Southern Colorado

Since 2020, Lightsource bp has partnered with Care and Share food bank to support the Minnequa Elementary school, which is located in Pueblo, Colorado close to our Bighorn and Sun Mountain Solar projects. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a lasting impact on the community, including an increase in children who are suffering from hunger.

For the last three school years, Lightsource bp has been funding a food pantry – including fresh produce – as well as a snack program located at Minnequa Elementary in order to ensure the students and their families have every day access to food. The mission of the School Pantry Program is to help alleviate child hunger by providing food to neighbors in need at a convenient location- the school their children attend! The location of the pantry in the school provides a comfortable and familiar environment for students and their families to “shop” for the foods they like to eat and cook with.

For the 2020-21 school year, we sponsored a ‘Send Hunger Packing’ program at the school, where children were able to bring food home each week in pre-packaged backpacks.

Quail Forever, East Central Indiana Chapter

Helping local conservationists launch new initiatives

East-central Indiana conservationists launched a new chapter of the Quail Forever conservation network in 2024. With a corporate matching grant supported by Lightsource bp, the organization will boost regional habitat conservation work, hunter recruitment and advocacy. Lightsource bp hopes our Indiana solar projects will be an asset to the state’s ecosystem and to Quail Forever, as solar farms can help preserve habitat for quail and other birds, insects, and a diversity of other native wildlife species. In fact, by planting grasses, flowers and native vegetation under and around solar panels, studies have measured an increase in bird and other wildlife populations at and around solar farms
Quail Forever and Pheasant Forever make up the nation’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to upland habitat conservation. The East Central Indiana Chapter, based in Adams, Blackford, Wells, Jay and Grant Counties, is among the newest of 754 local chapters spread across North America

Pollinator Habitat Aligned with Solar Energy (PHASE) Study

Researching the benefits of pollinator conservation at Bellflower Solar

Advancing research on pollinator habitat at solar facilities is essential for understanding the benefits of co-located conservation, as well as practical implementation strategies. The Pollinator Habitat Aligned with Solar Energy (PHASE) study, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technology Office (SETO), will measure ecological benefits of varying types of pollinator habitat at utility- scale solar projects across the Midwest, including Bellflower, in addition to photovoltaic performance and costs.
The research team consists of the University of Illinois Chicago, the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, the Argonne National Laboratory, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Six solar facilities across the Midwest, including Bellflower, have been selected as field research sites for this study.
Lightsource bp is proud to be contributing to this important project, which we hope will provide information for ourselves and our industry peers needed to scale-up co-located habitat establishment in the industry.
