Agrivoltaics: Supporting agriculture
and delivering responsible power

Agrivoltaics is the dual use of land for agricultural production and renewable energy generation.

By sharing the land, our responsibly developed agrivoltaics solutions are in synergy with agricultural operations,
support biodiversity and deliver local, reliable sources of low-carbon power – all at the same time.

A global vision with local roots

At Lightsource bp, we recognise that every parcel of land is unique to its owner and personal to local communities. We seek to understand the specific context, business case and challenges of each site, and work with local partners to design optimised agrivoltaics solutions on appropriate sites – from grazing and arable farming, to fisheries – ensuring each project is responsibly developed and tailored to local conditions.

With a global footprint spanning the Americas, EMEA and APAC, we use our international expertise and local partnerships to identify suitable sites and advance agrivoltaics as a viable dual land use solution.

Lasting value for every stakeholder

Developed in partnership with farming and other agricultural partners, our agrivoltaics projects are designed to maximise land use and create long-term value for all stakeholders.

The solar field is a big instrument in allowing us to full-time farm.”

How we deliver

We have been incorporating agrivoltaics into some of our solar projects since 2013, generating renewable power while also delivering benefits to farming and other agricultural communities through continued land use.

We aim to help expand and deliver stable, long-term value for investors and energy buyers through this dual approach. For farmers, agricultural partners, communities and policy makers our owned and operated projects can help to keep agricultural land productive, increase biodiversity and strengthen rural communities through job creation and land retention.

Our dedicated agrivoltaics experts can use data collection and advanced modelling to refine project design and quantify outcomes on appropriate sites – modifying our solar projects to accommodate the agrivoltaics use and helping to deliver biodiversity gains at our projects. This evidence-based approach can reduce risk, help to provide secure and sustainable long-term income, and aim to ensure our solutions are designed to contribute to customer sustainability goals.

We offer bespoke solutions in each of our markets from development through to operations, as applicable, that respond directly to the sites’ unique characteristics, meeting environmental requirements and aiming to create positive local impact through long-term partnerships.

LANDOWNERS

For Landowners

  • We can work with you right from the start to design tailored agreements and systems.
  • Our solutions are designed to meet your needs and minimise the impact on daily operations.
  • We offer secure and sustainable long-term income.
  • Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels can help provide synergy with crop farming especially from extreme weather (such as drought or hail) and shade that provides benefit to the livestock, poultry, other farm animals.
  • Evidence of improved agronomic potential: reduced water stress, longer grazing seasons and higher forage quality.
  • Can contribute to stronger farm economics through long-term income diversification and helping to keep land productive.
