Energy in Focus – In-house cross-functional teams building quality projects

“I’m very passionate about working in the renewable industry, particularly solar, wind and battery energy storage system (BESS). It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to be part of a positive change,” Ric Hatton, Director of Delivery for EMEA of Lightsource bp, has spent most of his career in power generation industry, with a keen interest in managing utility-scale renewable projects.

In his day-to-day role, Ric leads Grid, Commercial Engineering, Tender and Contract, and Construction teams. This in-house cross-functional setting offers agility in providing end-to-end solutions. Together, they work to optimise costs, improve returns and manage budget throughout the project life cycle – all while maintaining engineering standards, adhering to schedules and ensuring everyone returns home safely.

“During the construction phase, we closely manage contractors to tackle challenges head-on,” Ric explained. This includes supervising on-site work performed by engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors, managing schedules, as well as collecting feedback on golden row inspections, mechanical completion and provisional acceptance (PAC) to ensure all points are addressed by the EPC. “This ensures our projects are built safely, in line with Lightsource bp standards and according to schedule and budget.”

“There’s always the next challenge at Lightsource bp. We aim to maintain a firm, honest and pragmatic approach with our teammates and contractors, which helps develop lasting connections and leads to repeatable working relationships.”

Even outside of work, renewable energy is on Ric’s mind, “I’ve started renovating my house and hope to bring in my learnings from Lightsource bp to install solar panels on the roof and add a BESS in the basement.”
