About the Plas Power Solar Project
The Plas Power Solar Project will provide a source of renewable energy, helping to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to Wales’ net-zero goals, and contribute to the UK’s ambition of a fivefold increase in solar energy generation, up to 70GW by 2035 as set out in the UK’s Net Zero and Energy Security Strategy.
It is estimated that the solar project could generate up to 57MWac of electricity, which is equivalent to providing enough power to meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 27,726 homes, saving 15,821 tonnes of carbon.
The site, which is approximately 140 hectares, is located immediately east of Coedpoeth and 3.4km west of Wrexham. The nearest settlements are Coedpoeth, New Broughton, Wrexham, Rhostyllen and Talwrn. The site is a former open cast coal mine and is currently predominantly grassland used for grazing.
The site comprises several agricultural fields, primarily used for pasture grazing, bound by a mixture of mature woodland, trees, hedgerows, fencing, agricultural tracks, and roads.
Our proposal includes plans to create a meadow grassland which can be lightly grazed by sheep, so the land under the solar project will be maintained for agricultural purposes. Alongside there is also the opportunity to enhance existing and create new habitats to benefit local wildlife and deliver a biodiversity net gain.
Following the initial engagement in 2021, we have updated our proposals and are now sharing the latest plans with the community.
We are committed to supporting the local communities around our solar projects, to create a positive impact on society and the environment that goes beyond generating renewable energy.
Feel free to take a look at the Plas Power newsletter below.
Lightsource bp is committed to working closely with local communities in relation to the Plas Power Solar Project to ensure that the project benefits the local community – not just by generating safe, clean and affordable energy, but by improving the local ecosystem and economy as well. We construct our solar farms with a view to strengthen rural economies, promote solar education, foster environmental sustainability, and create partnerships.
